Saudi Arabia ranks third in the world in date production, with about 2 and a half crore date palm trees of 360 species. Some of the most popular varieties of dates are Rathan Al Medina, Maskani, Mabrum, Khalas, Barhi, Shaibi, Ajua etc. The people of Saudi Arabia love dates very much. A Saudi citizen eats about 30 kg of dates on an average every year.
Saudi Arabia’s Al-Qasim City is home to the world’s largest palm grove, Al-Razihi Garden, which has about 2.5 million palm trees in an area of 5,000 hectares, producing about 45 varieties of date palms. Al-Razihi date orchard is inscribed on the Guinness Book of World Records.
During the holy month of Ramadan, dates are provided free of charge from this garden in Makkah-Madinah. The owner of the garden is Sheikh Saleh bin Abdul Aziz Al Rajehi, a top Saudi businessman. The world’s largest Islamic bank is owned by Saudi Arabia’s most popular Al Razi Bank.
